The resignation comes as a number of other senior US officials have resigned or been forced to resign in recent weeks.
A few weeks ago, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced in a statement that Navy Secretary John Phelan was leaving the administration immediately.
Phelan’s dismissal comes just weeks after Secretary of War Pete Hegsett fired Gen. Randy George, the Army’s top officer.
Hegsett has also fired several other generals, admirals and senior military leaders since taking office last year.
