New York Times: Trump’s authoritarianism index sounds the alarm in the U.S.

New York Times

PNN – The New York Times reported that Trump has supported rules that could disenfranchise a number of eligible voters.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network; the editorial board of The New York Times warned in an analytical report that U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to interfere in the election are eroding the country’s democracy.

In the fourth edition of its “Authoritarianism Index,” the newspaper examines 12 indicators of democratic backsliding in the U.S. and assesses the progression of this trend on a scale from zero—representing a robust democracy prior to a potential second Trump term—to 10, signifying full-blown authoritarianism.

Following Trump’s recent moves regarding the 2026 midterm elections, The New York Times has raised his score on the “manipulating rules to stay in power” index by one point, bringing it to 3.

According to the newspaper, Trump has pushed Republicans in states under their control to redraw electoral districts—aiming to retain a congressional majority even with fewer votes—and has backed laws that could disenfranchise eligible voters.

The report also highlights concerns regarding the potential use of federal power to delegitimize lawful votes, as well as a televised address by Trump on July 16 that made false and misleading claims about election fraud.

The New York Times editorial board has warned that the continuation of such actions could pave the way for further interference in the 2026 and even 2028 elections, urging politicians from both parties and federal judges to stand firm against attempts to interfere with the electoral process.

This index will be published starting in October 2025 and, in addition to election interference, examines areas such as the suppression of dissent, the use of the military within the United States, and the circumvention of Congress as signs of democratic erosion.
