Details of the first US diplomatic engagement with Syria in 12 years.
According to Al-Mayadeen, the US State Department spokesperson announced that the US diplomatic delegation met with representatives of the terrorist group “Tahrir al-Sham” in Damascus on Friday.
Continuing his report on the trip, the US State Department spokesperson added: “American diplomats discussed with Tahrir al-Sham about the principles of the transfer of power in Syria and regional developments.”
He emphasized that the fight against ISIS was also discussed and exchanged during the talks with Tahrir al-Sham in Damascus.
The senior US official noted that the US diplomats spoke with Syrian civil society, activists, and representatives of various sects.
He also said that the US diplomatic delegation discussed the fate of a missing journalist and American citizens who disappeared in Syria during the Bashar al-Assad regime.
The US Embassy in Syria also announced that the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs met with representatives of Tahrir al-Sham on Friday. During the meeting, the principles agreed upon by the US and its allies at the Aqaba summit were discussed.
The US Embassy added that at today’s meeting in Damascus, support for an inclusive political process in Syria led by the Syrians themselves and the formation of a government that respects their rights was emphasized, and consultations were held on regional incidents and the importance of joint efforts to combat terrorism.
