PNN – The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. government is intensifying pressure on various nations in an effort to restrict Iran’s global financial, banking, and transport links.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. government is stepping up pressure on various countries to limit Iran’s financial, banking, and transport connections with the rest of the world and to further isolate Tehran.
A former Citi official, now working at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has warned several countries during a confidential trip that continued cooperation with Iran could entail financial consequences for them.
According to the report, a U.S. official has called on nations to halt Iran-related flights and to sever or restrict their banks’ ties with Iranian financial institutions. Washington is leveraging countries’ access to the U.S. financial system to exert pressure on Iran’s trading partners.
The Wall Street Journal reports that this pressure campaign has targeted even those nations that were previously reluctant to fully comply with U.S. sanctions against Iran. The Trump administration’s objective is to curtail Iran’s revenue streams and its access to the global economy by restricting banking, trade, and transportation channels.
The newspaper also reported that U.S. pressure has intensified at a time when the conflict between Iran and the United States, along with restrictions imposed in the Strait of Hormuz, has impacted regional trade and shipping.
