UN: Gaza has the highest per capita number of child amputations in the world.
According to Anadolu Agency, Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), stated on X-Net: Gaza has the highest rate of child amputations in the world relative to its population.
Referring to statistics prepared before the Israeli attacks, he stated: There is at least one disabled person in every five families and almost half of these families have a disabled child. There is a “disability epidemic” in Gaza.
Lazzarini noted that the stories of people who needed special care during the attacks have rarely been told. The attacks have also caused an epidemic of traumatic injuries and require rehabilitation services.
He emphasized: that Gaza has the highest rate of child amputations per capita in the world. Many of these children have undergone surgery without even anesthesia and have had their arms and legs amputated.
Lazzarini also stated: “According to a report by the World Health Organization, one out of every four people injured in Israeli attacks has suffered deep injuries and requires intensive care.”
