PNN – New polls show that American citizens’ belief in the place of democracy in their national identity has fallen sharply.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, the results of new Associated Press polls show that on the eve of the 250th anniversary of American independence, the belief of American citizens in the key place of democracy in their national identity has fallen sharply.
Accordingly, only 66 percent of Americans consider a “democratically elected government” to be “very important or extremely important” to their country’s identity; while this figure was about 76 percent in 2024 and close to 80 percent in 2021.
Additionally, 20 percent of Americans consider a “democratically elected government” to be “somewhat important” to their country’s identity and 13 percent consider it “not at all important.”
The proportion of people who consider the United States to be “one of the greatest countries in the world” has also fallen from 51 percent in 2024 to 44 percent in 2026.
The survey was conducted just days before the 250th anniversary of America’s independence on July 4, a day when most Americans celebrate their values, including democracy and freedom.
This is consistent with a recent Quinnipiac University poll in which more than half of Americans said their country’s democracy no longer works.
