CNN’s account of Trump’s missteps regarding Iran

PNN – In a report, CNN stated that the Trump administration’s optimism indicates a miscalculation of battlefield realities.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network; CNN—in an analysis examining the actions of Donald Trump’s administration during four and a half months of conflict with Iran—noted that many predictions and claims made by U.S. officials during this period quickly proved to be incorrect.

The report compares the Trump administration’s optimism to the U.S. government’s erroneous predictions regarding the Iraq War, characterizing it as a sign of a misjudgment of battlefield realities.

According to CNN, one of the Trump administration’s major miscalculations was predicting that the war would be short-lived. Trump had repeatedly stated that the conflict would last only four to five weeks; yet, more than four and a half months later, not only has the war not ended, but there is also no clear prospect for its conclusion. Furthermore, Trump’s claim regarding U.S. control over the Strait of Hormuz and the imposition of tolls on ships was walked back by the White House just a day later and even contradicted the previous positions held by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

This analysis also highlights the shift in Trump’s stance regarding Iran. Following the interim agreement, the U.S. President had spoken of the “rationality” of Iranian officials and the possibility of reaching a deal; yet, after the ceasefire collapsed, he described those same officials using harsh terms such as “crazy,” “evil,” and “filth.” Meanwhile, Trump’s initial call for the Iranian people to rise up against the regime faded into oblivion when that scenario failed to materialize.

CNN goes on to highlight other unfulfilled predictions made by the Trump administration—such as a rapid drop in gasoline prices to below $3 and the claim of U.S. “total dominance” over Iranian airspace—noting that these promises, too, failed to align with the realities on the ground. The outlet concludes that, taken together, these instances indicate the Trump administration miscalculated regarding Iran’s capabilities, the course of the conflict, and its consequences, and that some of these claims were made with the aim of managing public opinion.
