Tel Aviv University’s unequivocal statement opposing any legislation that would enforce gender segregation within its walls represents a rare and vital act of civil resistance. This is a battle that extends beyond the right to education, striking at the very core of these institutions.
At the same time, public spaces are also fracturing. The decision by the Bnei Brak municipality to enforce gender segregation on sidewalks is perhaps the most striking and clear symbol of this approach. It is an attempt to normalize a worldview that marginalizes women; we are witnessing this trend not only within insular religious institutions but also on the ordinary streets of Israel (the occupied territories).
The author then points to the reality of efforts by hardline Zionist factions to enforce gender segregation on sidewalks, writing: If we accept the legitimacy of ‘segregated sidewalks,’ we pave the way for segregation and discrimination at bus stops, in parks, at shopping centers, and in other public facilities. This represents a gradual yet systematic erosion of our ownership of shared spaces.
