PNN – A new Reuters poll indicates that Americans are concerned about the consequences of a war with Iran and rising fuel prices.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; results from a recent joint Reuters/Ipsos poll show that a significant number of Americans believe a continued war between the U.S. and Iran would lead to greater instability in the Middle East; they are also worried about the economic and political repercussions of such a conflict.
According to this poll, conducted over six days during the fifth month of a U.S. war with Iran, 50 percent of respondents predicted that U.S. military action against Iran would further destabilize the Middle East over the coming year. In contrast, only 17 percent believed such a war would lead to increased regional stability. Additionally, 16 percent believed the situation would not change significantly, while 17 percent offered no response or stated they did not know.
The poll also indicates that Americans are pessimistic about the economic consequences of the war. Fifty-eight percent of respondents expect gasoline prices to rise, while only 15 percent believe fuel prices will fall. These heightened concerns come as disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes—have impacted energy markets.
The results of this poll also indicate a decline in public support for the war, with only 35 percent of Americans favoring its continuation. Furthermore, for the first time since these polls began in late 2024, American voters have rated Democrats—by a narrow margin—as more capable than Republicans of managing the war, combating terrorism, and handling the economy.
These findings could pose a political challenge for Donald Trump and the Republican Party as they approach the congressional midterm elections. Although 80 percent of Republicans generally approve of Trump’s performance and 66 percent support his handling of the conflict with Iran, only 41 percent believe that such a war would ultimately lead to greater stability in the Middle East.
According to a Reuters report, the war launched against Iran in late February—involving the United States and the Zionist regime—has so far cost American taxpayers at least $37.5 billion and resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. military personnel.
Meanwhile, some experts believe that the economic consequences will persist even if the conflict ends quickly, although there are differing views regarding the war’s ultimate impact on regional stability.
