PNN – A prominent American publication attributed the U.S. President’s turn toward sanctions to a military failure against Iran, noting that the new sanctions might also prove ineffective.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; the American magazine The Atlantic—in a report titled “Why Trump Wants Economic Sanctions against Iran”—wrote that U.S. President Donald Trump has failed to bring the conflict with Iran to a close over the past several months. An extensive bombing campaign has lost its effectiveness, and U.S. ammunition stockpiles are dwindling.
The Atlantic wrote that the diplomatic process is moving slowly because Iranian leaders remain intent on deliberately dragging it out while further consolidating their control over the Strait of Hormuz. Even the current truce—itself highly fragile and volatile—has failed to significantly lower global energy costs.
The American outlet added that, with few options remaining, the Trump administration has turned to a likely long-term campaign of economic pressure, pledging to squeeze Iran until its leaders have no choice but to return to serious negotiations.
The Atlantic wrote: However, if the U.S. fails to penalize countries that continue to trade with Iran and help keep its economy afloat, this approach may prove effectively toothless.
The English-language publication noted: In the past, Trump has shown little inclination to confront nations such as China and Russia—or even North Korea, which maintains a strategic alliance with Tehran.
