PNN – The UN Secretary-General condemned Washington’s attacks on Iran, expressing concern over reports of Iranian civilian casualties resulting from the US aggression last night.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing Anadolu Agency, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern on Wednesday regarding the US aggression against Iranian territory last night. He also raised alarms over reports of civilian casualties—including an attack by American forces on a wedding ceremony in Iran that resulted in the deaths and injuries of a number of Iranian civilians.
Stéphane Dujarric, the UN Spokesperson, stated at a press briefing: I can say that the UN Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the renewed exchange of fire between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran overnight.
The UN spokesperson then added: The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of civilian casualties, including an alleged attack on a wedding ceremony in Iran. The Secretary-General condemns all attacks against civilians. He has reiterated that all parties must adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.
Dujarric noted that few countries in the region are immune to this escalation of tensions, and airspace and vital shipping lanes remain heavily affected.
He stated that Guterres once again calls for an immediate halt to military actions and urges all parties concerned to exercise restraint and refrain from actions or statements that could further escalate existing tensions.
Stéphane Dujarric also warned that as you can imagine, a further escalation of tensions would have devastating consequences for civilians, the entire region, and beyond, noting that humanitarian operations in the area are already facing immense strain and a lack of funding.
Dujarric stated that the UN Secretary-General calls upon the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately return to the path of diplomacy, adding that achieving a comprehensive and sustainable solution is possible only through dialogue and negotiation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s recommendation regarding negotiation and diplomacy comes against the backdrop of two prior U.S. acts of aggression against Iranian territory—carried out in violation of all international laws—which occurred during indirect Tehran-Washington talks, thereby demonstrating to the world that the United States has no genuine interest in negotiation.
In an attack by the American enemy on a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak—located in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province—more than 70 of our compatriots were martyred or wounded; the majority of the victims were women and children.
These barbaric war crimes, which constitute a flagrant violation of fundamental principles of international law, are reminiscent of previous American-Zionist atrocities committed over the past year and a half, including those in Minab and Lamerd.
In response to this US military aggression, and exercising the inherent right to legitimate self-defense, the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran launched crushing defensive strikes against the US military bases that had served as the origin and support for the aggression against the Iranian nation.
