PNN – In an analysis, CNN wrote that Trump has eroded the Republicans’ traditional advantage in national security through his actions regarding the conflict with Iran.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; CNN reported in an analysis that Donald Trump’s political conduct has largely dismantled the traditional Republican edge in the two areas usually considered the party’s greatest strengths—the economy and national security—a shift significantly shaped by the conflict with Iran.
According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, American views on the two parties’ ability to handle “war, foreign conflicts, and terrorism” have become nearly evenly split; 37 percent of American adults said Democrats have a better approach, while 36 percent preferred Republicans—a shift from the 11-point lead Republicans held in this area following the 2024 election.
A Fox News poll presents a similar picture: 50 percent of registered voters stated that Republicans perform better on national security, while 48 percent preferred the Democrats—a margin that stood at 12 points in favor of the Republicans in January, prior to the onset of the conflict with Iran.
Fox News polls regularly gauge the views of registered voters regarding how the two parties compare on the issues of terrorism and national security. Prior to the war involving Iran, Democrats had not come within even a 10-point margin of Republicans on either of these issues.
Republicans have also consistently led in Gallup polls regarding national security. Democrats have surpassed their rivals in this area only once in the twenty-first century—in 2007.
Gallup data regarding which party performs better in handling “international terrorism and military threats” has been even more lopsided in favor of the Republican Party.
Across 22 polls conducted since the year following 9/11, Democrats have held the lead only once—in 2007—while Republicans have led by double-digit margins for the most part.
A recent Fox News poll also showed Democrats leading Republicans on the economy by 54 percent to 45 percent—a 9-point advantage—marking the Democrats’ largest lead in this area since 2006.
The point when Democrats took the lead on the economy dates back to April—marking the first time they had held such a lead since 2010, a period that followed the 2008 financial crisis and the presidency of George W. Bush.
Results from a CNN poll conducted in May indicate a narrow margin between the two parties regarding the economy: 35 percent of American adults favor the Democrats, while 33 percent favor the Republicans.
It also appears that individuals from both parties believe Trump made a major miscalculation regarding the potential outcomes and consequences of a war with Iran, as well as the implementation of certain other policies, such as global tariffs.
In any case, members of the U.S. national security team may face greater scrutiny, as this is an area where Democrats and Republicans compete fiercely.
While education and healthcare have almost always been key priorities for Democrats, national security and defense have consistently been favored issues for Republicans.
The Atlantic previously reported that, less than two years after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, support among segments of the electorate that had gravitated toward him has noticeably declined.
Analysts attribute this drop in support primarily to ongoing economic woes, rising living costs, and persistent inflationary pressures; additionally, some reports have linked the price hikes to the economic consequences of a U.S. war with Iran.
The U.S. midterm elections will be held in November 2026. Currently, Republicans control both the House and the Senate, but there is a strong possibility that Democrats will wrest control of either chamber from them. Traditionally, the president’s party loses in midterm elections.
