According to the report of Pakistan News Network citing Al Jazeera; the UN Security Council convened today, Thursday, to discuss the issue of Iran.
China at the Security Council: Efforts to reimpose sanctions on Iran are divisive and illegal.
China’s representative stated that the Security Council concluded its review of Iran’s nuclear file last year, and the current Council president has no mandate to prepare a 90-day report or convene a meeting on this matter.
He added that Beijing deeply regrets the insistence of certain members on the forced reimposition of UN sanctions against Iran, viewing this as a factor that deepens divisions and poses a serious obstacle to the political resolution of the issue.
Speaking at the UN Security Council, China’s representative also described the US unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA, its two attacks on Iran during negotiations, and its resort to a policy of “maximum pressure” as the causes of the “current complex and uncontrollable situation” in West Asia.
He added that the United States must abandon the use of force and engage in genuine negotiations with Iran.
The Chinese representative stated: When addressing the Iranian nuclear issue, we must abandon double standards and respect the legitimate rights and interests of the parties involved.
He added: As a non-nuclear-weapon state party to the NPT, Iran possesses the legitimate right to the peaceful use of its nuclear program.
He further added: China notes Iran’s repeated commitments not to develop nuclear weapons.
Remarks by the Russian Representative
Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on Iran, the Russian representative stated: The Russian Federation opposes resolutions issued against Iran. We support China’s statement regarding the ‘snapback’ mechanism. We believe that the snapback mechanism has concluded and that we are witnessing the sunset of the JCPOA.
He added: Russia will under no circumstances allow sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran to be reimposed. The facts and realities surrounding Iran’s peaceful nuclear program are being completely distorted and misrepresented by certain parties.
UK Representative Reiterates Baseless Allegations against Iran’s Peaceful Nuclear Program!
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting focused on Iran, the UK representative stated that Iran’s nuclear issue has been a matter of significant international security concern since 2006, noting that numerous discussions regarding it have taken place within the Security Council.
The representative claimed: Ultimately, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was reached, under which economic sanctions against Iran would be lifted provided the country adhered to its commitments. However, Iran continued its nuclear activities and deviated from its obligations. Iran is the only country that engages in nuclear enrichment without possessing nuclear weapons.
US Representative Distorts Reality to Mask Sanctions Failure and Defy Global Will
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Iran, the US representative stated that the United States strongly rejects the remarks made by China and Russia and supports the position of the United Kingdom. Last year, the Council decided to reimpose sanctions resolutions against Iran and resume the implementation of those sanctions.
The representative claimed that a 90-day report was due today, but the Iranian government has regrettably blocked access to nuclear sites. Russia and China seek to disregard the resolutions and defend Iran by exercising their veto power; in doing so, they are ignoring fundamental UN principles.
