PNN – Members of the U.S. Congress have warned the President about the economic consequences of resuming war with Iran and the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network citing Time magazine, Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Minority Leader in the Senate, sharply criticized the Trump administration regarding a potential return to war with Iran.
Schumer stated: Trump’s so-called understanding with Iran fell apart before the ink was even dry. Both the House and the Senate voted to keep our troops out of harm’s way and to end this war right now. Trump must abide by this decision.
He added: Enough is enough. End the war.
Chris Murphy, a Democratic senator from Connecticut, also pointed to the economic consequences of the war, noting that gasoline prices are rising again.
He warned: What is the bottom line? Trump has no options left. His mounting incompetence has trapped the U.S. in a situation where things will only get worse.
Teresa Leger Fernandez, a Democratic Representative from New Mexico, also expressed her concern, stating: Trump is notifying Congress that the United States is at war again, while simultaneously claiming the authority to continue that conflict for another 60 days without congressional approval. He cannot simply end a war on paper to circumvent the law and then restart the countdown whenever it suits him. Enough with the lies. Enough with the endless wars.
Democratic Senator Andy Kim also stated that Trump’s contradictory actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz are not a negotiating tactic; rather, they come at a high cost to Americans and threaten the global economy. Imposing heavy 20% tariffs will drive up the cost of everyday goods—ranging from farm fertilizers to children’s toys.
New Hampshire Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan also remarked that while Trump announces an end to the truce with Iran, gasoline prices are rising again—at a time when Americans are already struggling with the overall cost increases resulting from the war, tariffs, and other actions taken by Trump. Yet, President Trump says he is not even considering the financial situation of the American people.
On Monday, Democratic Representative Adam Schiff of California called on Congress to reassert its constitutional authority regarding war-making decisions.
Following the collapse of the ceasefire, Schiff introduced a new resolution based on the War Powers Act. The resolution was co-sponsored by Democratic lawmakers Tim Kaine of Virginia, Andy Kim of New Jersey, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.
Schiff stated: We were promised that the war had ended months ago. Yet now, within just a few days, we have gone from a bad deal between the U.S. and Iran to further attacks, another blockade, and greater turmoil—developments that will only drive up prices.
He continued: Any claim by the Trump administration that the president retains the authority to take military action for another 60 days without congressional authorization has no legal basis. He called for a new vote to end this war.
Democratic lawmakers have condemned the resumption of hostilities with Iran and the return to conflict, despite the temporary ceasefire agreement signed on June 17.
Last month, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate passed resolutions under the War Powers Act aimed at limiting Trump’s ability to continue the war.
