PNN – Citing U.S. officials, an American media outlet reported that the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) is facing an urgent budget shortfall—primarily due to the war against Iran—and that critical military funds are expected to run out within weeks.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; citing The Washington Post, budgetary pressures have forced the U.S. military to cut back on training and readiness maintenance. Costs are expected to rise further given U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to continue the war against Iran.
The White House has requested $67 billion in emergency funding, but Congress has yet to reach an agreement to approve it. With the House of Representatives set to begin a month-long recess, it is unlikely that additional military funding will be secured in the short term.
Pat Harrigan, a Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee, said in an interview: Everyone needs to look at this situation and take the matter seriously.
Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell also stated that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset would do whatever is necessary to maintain military readiness, describing the defense budget as “essential.
Hegset and General Dan Kane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are scheduled to present the administration’s budget request to the Senate Appropriations Committee, while White House Budget Director Russell Vought is expected to brief Republican lawmakers on the matter.
