PNN – A study published by the international aid organization Mercy Corps found: Israel’s ongoing attack on the Gaza Strip has damaged or rendered inaccessible 96 percent of Gaza’s agricultural land, meaning the near-complete destruction of local food supplies.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing Al-Mayadeen, according to the study, only 7 percent of the Gaza Strip’s agricultural infrastructure is still operational, and water systems are severely deteriorated and wells are damaged.
The organization also noted that high soil salinity and sewage seepage into agricultural land make it unsuitable for agriculture.
Mercy Corps stressed that the devastation is not simply an environmental disaster, but is “directly linked to the food crisis.”
The international group warned that if Israel continues to impose restrictions on the entry of necessary goods and equipment and if soil and water contamination is not addressed, the full restoration of agricultural land in Gaza could take years and may be completely derailed.
The organization added: High soil salinity and sewage infiltration into agricultural lands make it unsuitable for agriculture.
Mercy Corps concluded by emphasizing that the devastation is not simply an environmental disaster, but is “directly linked to the food crisis.”
