Hundreds of thousands of Italians took to the streets to protest violence against women

PNN – Following the murder of a 22-year-old Italian woman by her partner, hundreds of thousands of Italians came to the streets and demanded an end to gender-based violence against women in their country.

According to Pakistan News Network from ANSA news agency, the spark of these protests, which was sparked by the murder of a 22-year-old girl by her ex-partner, led to a protest march in the streets of Milan, Rome, Messina, and Naples, and drew more than half a million people to the streets.

Demonstrators wearing purple headscarves chanted “We want to live” as a protest against the widespread violence and murder of women in their country. Patriarchy is enough.”

Italian President Sergio Mattarella said in a message for these protests: “The painful news has shaken the conscience of the country.”

In a video message on Saturday, Roberta Metsula, the President of the European Parliament, mentioned the case of the victims of femicide in Europe and said: We can and must act to protect women. With determination, education, awareness campaigns and ambitious legislation. There are no excuses, it is already too late, we must stand up for women.

Pope Francis also called for action to prevent gender violence in a post on the X account (formerly Twitter). He wrote: “Violence against women is a poisonous weed that disturbs society and must be eradicated.”

The World Health Organization recently announced in a report that one out of three women over the age of 15 in the European Union is a victim of physical and sexual violence. Sociologists have also considered violence and physical and sexual abuse and femicide as silent epidemics in Europe.
