PNN – Indonesia’s finance minister announced that the country is planning to create a system to collect tolls from ships passing through the Strait of Malacca.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; Indonesia says it is planning to collect tolls from ships passing through the Strait of Malacca.
Indonesia’s Finance Minister Borbaia Yudho Sadiva said on Wednesday that the country is planning to establish a system to collect tolls from ships passing through the Strait of Malacca.
The Jakarta Globe reported that the Indonesian official noted that despite his country being located on one of the most important global trade and energy routes, no tolls are currently collected from passing ships.
He added that Indonesia plans to implement the new system in coordination with neighboring countries, a move that falls within the framework of President Prabowo Subianto’s vision to strengthen the country’s role in global trade.
The Indonesian finance minister stressed that the plan is still in its early stages and that it may not be implemented soon, as reaching an agreement with coastal countries is difficult and could provoke reactions.
The Strait of Malacca, which is surrounded by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, connects the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
