According to an Axios report, Washington has intensified pressure on Cuba’s economy by tightening sanctions and restricting the country’s access to energy supplies. Blocking oil shipments from nations such as Venezuela and Mexico has exacerbated Cuba’s energy crisis, leading to widespread power outages across the country.
Rubio, who is of Cuban descent, has taken the lead in steering this policy. In messages addressed to the Cuban people, he has held the country’s government responsible for its economic and livelihood hardships, declaring that improved relations with the U.S. and access to aid will be contingent upon the implementation of fundamental political and economic reforms in Havana.
Alongside economic pressures, the U.S. government has stepped up its security and diplomatic measures against Cuba. Reports indicate the activation of special intelligence task forces—including within the CIA—and diplomatic efforts by Washington to further isolate the Cuban government.
