PNN – The Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations stated that a framework for Security Council reform has yet to take shape, and that Moscow will oppose Western efforts to bring their own allies into the Council.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; Anna Evstigneeva, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, told RIA Novosti that no agreed-upon model for reforming the UN Security Council—one that commands the support of a majority of member states—has been developed to date.
She added that Russia will oppose attempts by Western nations to include their allies—from the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)—in the Security Council.
Pointing to disagreements regarding reforms to the UN Security Council, Yustigneyeva stated that certain Western nations—despite already enjoying significant representation within the Council—are seeking to increase the presence of their allies in the body.
The Russian diplomat emphasized that Moscow would oppose such an approach.
Discussions on reforming the UN Security Council continue, focusing on issues such as increasing the number of members, expanding the representation of developing nations, and the distribution of permanent and non-permanent seats. In its previous positions, Russia has advocated for an enhanced role for African nations, while opposing any expansion of the presence of developed countries and Western allies within the Council.
