A group of leading Indian physicists specializing in string theory have expressed solidarity with academics in Iran, Palestine and Lebanon, condemning US and Israeli attacks on universities and civilian institutions during the recent war.

More than 50 string theorists – physicists working at the edge of human understanding of nature – said they would like to express “their heartfelt solidarity” with researchers and civilians in the three countries amid what has been described as “the recent war started by the United States and Israel.”

Ashok Sen and Spanta Wadia, both world-renowned, award-winning theoretical physicists, are among the signatories to the statement, which includes a group of professors and scientists from India’s top science and technology universities and research laboratories.

The group, naming Sharif University of Technology, Shahid Beheshti University, Iran University of Science and Technology, Isfahan University of Technology, and Lebanese University, announced: Universities and educational institutions in Iran, as well as Lebanon and Palestine, have been attacked during the war.

The Indian scientists added that the attacks were “part of a wider assault on civilian targets that has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and the displacement of millions.” The group also referred to Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, saying: Almost all the universities and schools there have been destroyed.

They said: We unequivocally condemn these crimes against humanity, which, apart from the tragic loss of human life, will cause long-term damage to the future of education and research in these regions.
