The results of a survey: American society is highly divided

PNN – According to the results of a recently published survey, 80% of Americans believe that their country is deeply divided, and only 18% believe that the society is united.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from Hill news base, according to a recently published Gallup poll, 80% of American adults say that the people of this country are much divided over the most important values. In this survey, the most important values are not defined and interpretation is left to the participant.

According to the poll, which was conducted from August 1 to 20, only 18 percent believe that the American people are united and agree with each other on important values.

According to this news site belonging to the US Congress, over the past two decades, the number of people who say that Americans are divided over the most important values has grown steadily, while the share of people who say that the people of this country are united and agree with each other has slowly decreased.

The author of this article argues: From the last time this survey was conducted in 2016 until now, the number of people who believe that the division in American society has intensified, has grown by three percentage points and has reached 80% from 77%. While in the 2012 survey, 69 percent had this opinion.

According to the 2016 survey, the share of people who considered the American society to be united and homogeneous also decreased by three percent and reached 21 to 18 percent. While in 2012, 29 percent had this opinion.

Hill notes that the growing divide in American society began in 1994; In the year when 55% declared that the country was severely divided, while 39% believed in unity in the society. This figure reached 66% in 1998 and only 31% saw the country as uniform.

Referring to the above figures, the author of this article mentioned that the division in the US society decreased after the attacks of September 11, 2001; In such a way that in November 2001 (two months after the September 11 attacks in November of the same year), nearly 40% believed in the existence of divisions in America, while 74% believed that the society was united and agreeable. This figure remained at the same level in 2002, but in 2004, it returned to the pre-9/11 trend.

Hill emphasizes that Republicans and Democrats also agree on the existence of divisions in the country. So that today only 19% of Democrats, 15% of Republicans and 18% of independent party members see the society as united and agreeable.

This news site adds: After the re-election of George W. Bush as the President of the United States in 2004, the Republicans saw the country as united and favorable with a figure of 48% compared to 33% of the Democrats. But in 2016, after the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election, this figure reached 31% of Republicans against 16% of Democrats.
