Trump invited America’s main rival to his inauguration!
According to Reuters, some sources have announced the decision of US President-elect Donald Trump to invite Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration ceremony, which will be held next month.
CBS News, citing several sources, said that the invitation was sent in early November, shortly after the US presidential election on November 5, and it is not clear whether the other side will accept it.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not yet commented on the matter. Trump told NBC News last Friday that he “gets along very well” with Xi Jinping and that he has been in contact with him this week.
The presence of a Chinese president, as the main geopolitical rival of the US, at the inauguration of one of its presidents would be unprecedented!
Trump has appointed a number of anti-China hawks to key positions in his second administration, including Marco Rubio as his secretary of state.
The president-elect has also said that Washington will add 10 percent to existing tariffs on goods imported from Beijing unless China does more to stop the trafficking of the highly addictive drug fentanyl. Trump had threatened to impose 60 percent tariffs on Chinese goods during his campaign.
