Who is Nawaf Salam, the new Prime Minister of Lebanon?

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday tasked Nawaf Salam with forming the country’s cabinet.

Nawaf Salam paved his way to becoming prime minister of his country by gaining the support of more than half of the Lebanese parliament in binding parliamentary consultations.

The Lebanese presidency announced that Lebanese President Joseph Aoun had conducted binding parliamentary consultations and, after consulting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, appointed Nawaf Salam to form a new cabinet. Nawaf Salam is abroad and was scheduled to return to his country on Tuesday.

Salam’s nomination for prime minister came just four days after Joseph Aoun was elected president.

Who is the person tasked with forming the Lebanese cabinet?

Nawaf Salam, born on December 15, 1953, is currently the president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and was Lebanon’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations headquarters in New York from 2007 to 2017. He also served as the President of the United Nations Security Council twice.
