Khalilzad: Taliban should learn from Tahrir al-Sham.

Former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad wrote in a message on X following the removal of the US $10 million reward for the arrest of Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group: “The US reward for the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is being removed. Others in similar situations can learn from Ahmed al-Sharaa how to join the mainstream international system. Will the Taliban pay attention?”

Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State Barbara Leaf announced after the US delegation met with the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Damascus that Washington had canceled the $10 million reward.

In justifying this decision, she said that Ahmed al-Sharaa had committed to not allowing terrorist groups to operate in Syria and pose a threat to the US or neighboring countries.

More than three years after the Taliban returned to power, the US has not yet canceled its rewards for helping to arrest Taliban leaders.
