The European Troika announces its readiness to use the trigger mechanism against Iran!
According to Reuters, the three countries Britain, France, and Germany, in a hostile move, sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council stating that they are ready to restore all international sanctions against Tehran if necessary by activating the “trigger mechanism”.
Reuters wrote that these countries will not be able to activate the trigger mechanism after the expiration of UN Resolution 2231 in 2015, which will expire on October 18, 2025.
The letter, which the ambassadors of Britain, Germany and France sent to the Security Council on December 6, states: “Iran must limit its nuclear program in order to create a political environment conducive to meaningful progress and achieve a diplomatic solution.”
In another part of the letter, without mentioning the “peaceful” nature of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program, we read: “We emphasize our determination to use all diplomatic tools to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, including activating the trigger mechanism if necessary.”
The three European countries, known as the “Troika,” had condemned Iran’s nuclear activities in a joint statement!
The hostile and provocative letter was sent while Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, called on European countries in a letter on Monday to “abandon the fruitless and failed policy of pressure and confrontation.” According to him, they should turn to diplomacy and focus on restoring the trust needed to resolve the current impasse.
The snapback or “trigger mechanism” is part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement, which allows member states to initiate the process of reimposing international sanctions on Tehran if they determine that Iran is in violation of the JCPOA. The signatories of the JCPOA have claimed that Iran is violating the provisions of the JCPOA after former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the international agreement in 2018. Trump, who has won the 2024 US presidential election, will officially return to the White House on January 20, 2025.
