PNN – Russia and China vetoed a US-proposed resolution at the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of the Iran sanctions committee.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network citing Al Jazeera; Russia and China vetoed the US-proposed resolution at the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of the Panel of Experts for the Iran sanctions committee.
The UN Security Council held a meeting today, Thursday, regarding the “experts on Security Council Resolution 1929,” focusing on “non-proliferation” and issues related to Iran’s nuclear program.
Speaking at the meeting, Russia’s representative to the Security Council stated: Security Council Resolution 2231 expired on October 18, 2025, and has been removed from the agenda; therefore, holding today’s meeting on this subject is entirely devoid of legal and procedural merit.
Vasily Nebenzia added: We categorically reject the attempts by certain members to create an illusion of ‘legitimacy’ through claims regarding the ‘snapback’ mechanism (the automatic reimposition of sanctions). Denouncing the meeting as illegitimate due to its focus on an expired agenda item, Russia called for a procedural vote to adopt the meeting’s agenda.
Pointing to the expiration of Resolution 2231 on October 18, 2025, China’s representative to the Security Council stated that the Council has concluded its consideration of the Iranian nuclear file and must not become a platform for advancing unilateralist agendas. China also called on all parties to play a constructive role—rather than engaging in actions that escalate tensions—in upholding the credibility of multilateralism and creating conditions for a political resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
Stating that Middle East issues and problems must be resolved through diplomacy, the Chinese representative emphasized that everyone must recognize Iran’s right to utilize its nuclear program for peaceful purposes.
In response to the veto of the draft resolution—which it had proposed against Iran—the US representative to the Security Council claimed that the vetoing of the extension of sanctions on Iran by China and Russia violates international rules.
