PNN – Four U.S. senators announced on Friday night that they had reached an agreement with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to advance updated sanctions legislation against Russia.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network citing Reuters, Senators Richard Blumenthal, Lindsey Graham, Jeanne Shaheen, and Roger Wicker announced in a statement: We are proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with the Trump administration to advance updated Russia sanctions legislation. We are very pleased with this significant progress and expect to enact this legislation very soon.
The statement reads: As Russia intensifies the killing of civilians, it is essential for the legislative and executive branches to work together to devise measures that impose a heavy cost on those who purchase Russian oil and natural gas, thereby fueling Putin’s war machine.
This bill—which Senator Graham has been developing for months alongside other Republicans and Democrats—would impose sanctions on countries that trade with Russia, including purchasers of its energy exports, in response to Moscow’s failure to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine.
Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ankara earlier this week. The tone of this meeting was starkly different from his past harsh criticisms of Zelenskyy, whom he had previously labeled “ungrateful.”
On Wednesday, Trump stated that he and Zelenskyy had established a “very good” rapport and that both Moscow and Kyiv want to end the war that began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
