Approval of temporary budget bill saved America from shutdown.

Approval of temporary budget bill saved America from shutdown.

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Friday that would prevent a government shutdown at midnight.

The bill passed the House by a vote of 366 to 34 on Friday evening, with 29 abstentions.

The bill will become law after passing the Senate and being signed by the president.

The bill prevented the federal government from shutting down in the early hours of Saturday.

The bill would fund the government through March 14, 2025, and would provide $100 billion for states hit by natural disasters and $10 billion for farmers, although it would not raise the debt ceiling.

President-elect Donald Trump has called for a two-year suspension of the debt ceiling so the government can borrow more freely.

The US federal government spent a whopping $6.2 trillion last year, and its total debt has surpassed $36 trillion.

Last week, the Republican majority and Democratic minority in the US House of Representatives reached an agreement on a three-month budget, but Elon Musk, a famous billionaire and close adviser to Trump, urged lawmakers to scrap the plan and come up with a new budget.

A federal shutdown could disrupt everything from law enforcement to national parks and suspend the pay of millions of federal employees.
