PNN – In an interview with The New Yorker, former US President Barack Obama, referring to his differences with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Iran, stated that war with Iran was ultimately not in the interests of the Israeli or American people.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Obama addressed the war imposed by Donald Trump on Iran in this conversation and said: I think repairing the damage that has been done to the international order will be even more difficult than some domestic reforms. If we look at it another way, the order after World War II was one of the best periods of American performance.
Responding to Trump’s threat against Iran to completely destroy a civilization, he said: I believe that American leadership – as represented by the president of this country – must reflect a fundamental respect for human dignity and honor, not just within our borders but beyond. That is part of the responsibility of leadership.
The former US president continued: If we don’t express these fundamental values, the world could fall apart in a very bad way.
According to the New Yorker, Trump is now considering concessions he once criticized during the Obama administration in his efforts to reach a new deal with Iran. Obama said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously made the same arguments for war with Iran that he is now making to Trump.
The former US president added: I think my assessment was correct. Netanyahu may have achieved what he wanted (war with Iran), but whether it is ultimately in the best interests of the Israeli people is questionable, and whether it is in the best interests of the United States, I also doubt. There is a long history of my disagreements with Netanyahu.
