PNN – The tension between Pope Leo, the leader of the Catholic Church, and Donald Trump has taken on a special form.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network; the tension between Pope Leo, the leader of the Catholic Church, and Donald Trump, which has intensified in recent days, has a long history. The Pope has repeatedly criticized Trump’s “tense” policies and emphasized that he will “continue to be firmly opposed to war” and strive to promote “peace, dialogue and multilateralism.” He had previously considered the US government’s arms aid to Israel an example of political debauchery and expressed strong positions against Washington’s policies.
In contrast, Donald Trump has openly accused Pope Leo of “overstepping his bounds” and should not criticize the President of the United States. Trump has said, “I don’t want a Pope who questions the performance of the elected President of the people.” He has also made claims about the Pope’s positions, adding that he is “not a supporter of Pope Leo.”
The new wave of the dispute began when Pope Leo called Trump’s recent threat against Iran “totally unacceptable.” Trump had warned that the United States could “destroy Iranian civilization” if Tehran did not come to an agreement on nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the pope urged Catholics to encourage political leaders to work to “end the war.”
Pope Leo has also made direct references to Trump several times in recent days. On March 31, he said: I have been informed that President Trump has stated that he wants to end the war; I hope he is looking for a way out. In recent remarks, the Pope also condemned the “illusion of absolute power” at the start of wars and called on world leaders to end the “current bloodshed.”
Pope Leo reiterated his opposition to the war, stressing that he had no intention of “entering into a direct debate” with Trump. He said: I will continue to speak out against war, with the aim of promoting peace, encouraging dialogue and multilateral relations.
Donald Trump had previously responded to Pope Leo’s positions by saying that he “would not accept a Pope who considers it okay to have nuclear weapons or who is indifferent to stopping crime.” He also said that the Pope “does not have a correct idea of the necessity of confronting countries that are armed with nuclear weapons.”
These tensions escalated after Trump posted an image generated by artificial intelligence on social media, showing him as a religious figure healing a person. This action was met with widespread reaction from users and much criticism, forcing Pope Leo to take a stand once again.
In another statement, Trump claimed that the Pope “does not understand the issue of war and should not be talking about it.” This statement sparked a new wave of reactions in the media.
In contrast, Pope Leo emphasized in a recent speech that “wars, violence, injustice and lies hurt the heart of God,” adding that he believed the religious message emphasized supporting the “humble and the injured” and that “promoting love and peace” should be the focus of efforts.
